To install Read and Write:
- Start here: https://www.texthelp.com/en-us/products/read-write/read-write-for-education/
- Click on “Try Read and Write”.
- Click on Windows or Mac and save the installer.
- Run the installer.
- When you run the program for the first time you’ll be asked to login. Select Sign in with Microsoft and login using your Carleton email address, YourUsername@cmail.carleton.ca, (staff: ….@cunet.carleton.ca).
Note that if you are downloading the Mac version of the software make sure to go into the General menu in the settings to enable Read&Write to automatically check for system updates.
Read and Write and the web (including Brightspace for online tests)
- Open a browser once Read and Write is running.
- Read and Write will prompt you to install a plug-in (or add-in).
- Follow instructions to do so.
- To read text on the web, hover the mouse cursor over any text you want read and the program will start reading.
To use Read and Write with PDF
- Click on the PDF button on the ribbon bar at the top.
- Browse your computer and open a PDF.
- Click anywhere on the text to have the program start reading.
Note: often PDFs will open in a browser. To read them effectively, save them offline and open via the RW PDF button.
To adjust the voice and speed (Windows)
- Click on the menu at the top right (three horizontal bars).
- Select “Show more settings”.
- Click on Speech. On the right you can choose a voice and adjust voice speed.
To adjust the voice and speed (Mac)
Click on gear icon at the top right. Settings will be similar to as shown for Windows.
