The Clayton H. Riddell Graduate Program in Political Management at Carleton University is delighted to announce the appointment of the Hon. Sergio Marchi as practitioner-in-residence for the 2020–21 academic year.

Mr. Marchi is a former parliamentarian, Cabinet minister, and ambassador. He served as Member of Parliament for York West from 1984 to 1999 and as chair of the National Liberal Caucus from 1990 to 1993. In the government of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, Mr. Marchi served in three portfolios: International Trade, Environment, and Citizenship and Immigration. After leaving politics in 1999, he was appointed Canada’s ambassador to the World Trade Organization and UN agencies in Geneva, a position he held until 2004.

The Riddell program offers Canada’s first graduate degree in applied politics. Students study Canadian political institutions, strategic communications, public opinion research, leadership, advocacy, policy, and campaigns. Graduates work for Cabinet ministers, members of Parliament, senators, government relations firms, advocacy organizations, and business associations.

The position of practitioner-in-residence is a one-year post held by a distinguished individual with extensive experience in Canadian politics. The previous practitioners-in-residence were Bill Fox (2015–16), Rob Silver (2016–17), William Stairs (2017–18), and Rachel Curran (2018–19). The practitioner-in-residence teaches two courses, mentors students, and organizes public events.
