Dmytro Basmat is a Senior News Editor at the Kyiv Independent, where he covers Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and its broader impact on Canada and the world. His past reporting has included breaking news, diaspora affairs, and global security coverage, including on-the-ground coverage of the G7 Leaders’ Summit.
Previously, Basmat served as a spokesperson and communications manager for the Liberal Party of Canada, managed federal and provincial political campaigns, and served as Executive Director of Youth Activists Inc. He brings a rare combination of journalism and national political experience to his work.
Basmat holds a Master’s degree in Political Management from Carleton University and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Governance from Toronto Metropolitan University. He is deeply involved in the Ukrainian-Canadian community and continues to advocate on its behalf.
