Director of Government Relations at HEXO Corp.
Laura spent several years working in politics both on the government side and political party side, honing her skills in strategic communications, media relations, issues management, political campaigns, and project management.
For two of those years, Laura worked as an issues manager in the Prime Minister’s Office, where she handled files ranging from agriculture to international trade, environment, natural resources, defence, and health, just to name a few. During that time, she managed several high-profile files that helped her develop the skills required for her current job advising clients across the country.
Laura’s time working with government officials at the highest levels gives her unique insight into how government operates, the regulatory and legislative framework, and how information flows between the civil service and political offices.
In December 2015, Laura started at Hill+Knowlton Strategies in Ottawa, first as Senior Consultant, and then as an Account Director, providing clients with public affairs advice and communications support. In November 2018, Laura was appointed director of government relations at HEXO Corp. HEXO is recreational cannabis company that trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange. It’s subsidiary, Hydropothecary, is a medical cannabis company that received its licence in 2013.
“Completing the Political Management Master’s program helped me further develop the specific skills required to strive in a political environment. With practical writing assignments in each class, I was able to grow my professional writing skills which allowed me to hit the ground running when I began at H+K. Being a one year program, MPM is an effective tool to move you to the next level in your career.” – Laura Kurkimaki
