Chad Mackinnon

Chad completed his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2017 before furthering his studies in Investigation and Protection Studies at Loyalist College. He now supports community safety and security as a Community Safety Worker with Ottawa Community Housing.

I would say try volunteering in areas that you may be a bit interested in. This is a great opportunity to speak with people currently working the job and network.

Brief description of what I do!

As a Community Safety Worker with Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) I am responsible for responding to a multitude of calls for service which can include but not limited to; domestic dispute, tenant dispute, loitering, cause disturbance, theft, noise and parking complaints. I work throughout all of Ottawa and my role is to provide safety and security to the 30,000 plus tenants residing with OCH.

What inspired your career path after graduation?

I have always been passionate about helping others. Having prior experience in a similar field, I knew the sector I wanted to point my career path towards.

How did your experience in the psychology program shape your journey?

Going through the psychology program definitely instilled confidence in my skills as someone ready to enter the workforce. It opened up opportunities that directly shaped the trajectory of my career path.

What skills or experiences were most valuable after graduation?

Understanding and analyzing human behavior was absolutely essential in helping me become successful in my current career.

Are there specific Psychology courses, professors, or experiences that stood out during your time at Carleton?

Abnormal Psychology was absolutely fantastic!
