Joel Landa

Joel earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, with a minor in Sociology and a specialization in Health Psychology. He is currently pursuing a degree in Social Work while working as a Case Manager with Ottawa Salus, supporting individuals with complex mental health needs through community-based services.

Try a few avenues, don’t be afraid to go around and dip your feet into different fields. Life is unpredictable, just take the moments as they are and just do the things that are scary. You don’t grow in comfort.

Brief description of what I do!

I work in case management and my main focus is on housing and supporting those with substance use. I alongside with seven other partners, work in the mental health domain aiding people’s well being .

What inspired your career path after graduation?

Initially, I was in education as a Behavioral Therapist / Special Education Assistant and later went into teaching. Overtime, as much as I loved education, I wanted more for myself and use my psychology skills on a bigger scale. I decided to make the leap of faith and try social work. And I’ve loved it ever since.

How did your experience in the psychology program shape your journey?

It shaped me in developing what my passion is; which is now in social work. I’ve met a lot of amazing professors along the way such as Kim Hellemans, Amina Mire, Deanna Whelan, and Bernadette Campbell and other amazing professors.

What skills or experiences were most valuable after graduation?

Understanding the brain and behavior, disability work, understanding how to do effective and efficient research.
