Brief description of what I do!
I am currently the Program Manager at the John Howard Society of Ottawa, where I manage a program where we support individuals with developmental disabilities and complex needs (including dual diagnosis, concurrent disorders, and behavioural challenges) who are transitioning from provincial institutions and correctional facilities back into the community.
Concurrently, I am pursuing a Master’s in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University, and serve as a Counseling Intern at NuVista Mental Health.
What inspired your career path after graduation?
Some of the 4th year seminars at Carleton really inspired me to pursue a career in supporting individuals with various developmental diagnoses. As I worked with different populations, I realized that what I was truly passionate about was helping people in more therapeutic settings leading to a career path towards counselling.
How did your experience in the psychology program shape your journey?
I started my journey at Carleton in a completely different program but as I developed as a student, I found that I was really passionate about psychology. The concepts really resonated with me which was further reinforced by the wonderful professors around me.
What skills or experiences were most valuable after graduation?
Interpersonal communication, critical thinking, openness to feedback, work experience while still in school (to be in a better position post graduation), and ability to adapt.
Do you have a favourite memory from your program at Carleton?
All of the professors were amazing however, I enjoyed my courses in developmental, personality, and forensic psychology.
What has been a highlight or proud moment in your career so far?
Being a program manager of an MCCSS (Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services) program and the ability to complete a Master’s program to further my education!
