Feb. 4, 2021
To All Members of the Carleton Community,
The Carleton University Board of Governors is launching a reappointment process for President and Vice-Chancellor, Benoit-Antoine Bacon. If reappointed, he will serve a second five-year term from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2028.
A key oversight role of the Board of Governors is to ensure strong, committed, enduring leadership at the helm of the university. As we move towards a post-pandemic future, the board’s responsibility to affirm resilient and reliable university leadership has never been more important.
The initial step of the reappointment process calls for assembling a 13-person advisory committee. Tasked with providing a recommendation on the president’s reappointment to the Board of Governors, the committee will commence its work in March and will report to the board at the June 1, 2021 meeting. The composition of the advisory committee is specified in the appointment guidelines:
- The Board Chair serves as chair of the committee
- The Board Vice-Chair
- Three community-at-large members of the board, elected by the board
- Three people to be elected by Senate from professional librarians and tenured faculty members (at least one holding the rank of full professor)
- One board staff member other than the academic or library staff, elected by the board
- One senior administrator and one dean to be elected by the Vice-President Academic and Research Committee
- One undergraduate student and one graduate student to be elected by Senate
You will be hearing more soon about how you may show your interest in participating on the advisory committee.
Once the committee is assembled, all members of the Carleton community will have an opportunity to submit feedback relevant to the reappointment process.
Carleton is committed to transparency, and all updates concerning the President and Vice-Chancellor’s reappointment will be posted on the Board of Governors website.
If you have any questions, please reach out to University Secretary Amanda Goth (amandagoth@cunet.carleton.ca)
Sincerely,
Dan Fortin
