SPPA Professor Robert Shepherd has received a SSHRC Partnership Engagement Grant for the project, “Canadian and International Experience in Spending Reviews.” It is a one-year grant to explore ways to work with the federal public service, and with five international jurisdictions with our key partner Performance and Planning Exchange (PPX).
Project Summary
The project will bring together academics and practitioners to examine the design considerations for an anticipated spending/expenditure review exercise at the federal level in Canada, although there are implications for designs of provincial exercises as well. It aspires to contribute to research on design considerations, but ultimately our longer-term aim is to understand the design decisions made domestically and internationally, and the approaches used and the rationale for each. It will draw directly on the expertise of the Performance and Planning Exchange (PPX) to address the question: what are the appropriate design considerations that would inform the next federal spending review exercise drawing on domestic and international comparisons of past and future exercises?
