“Seeking Social Democracy: Seven Decades in the Fight for Equality,” published in October by ECW Press, is a worthy project documenting the ideas and evolution of Ed Broadbent, who led the NDP through four federal elections. His co-writers — Frances Abele, Jonathan Sas and Luke Savage — all worked with him at different periods of his career. Broadbent’s death on Jan. 11 has served to increase interest in the social-democratic icon and move his book onto the Canadian non-fiction bestseller list, where it debuts this week at No. 8.
