New Publication: SPPA Professor Stephan Schott, alongside co-authors J.M. Chapman, J. Qitsualik, and B. Puqiqnak, has co-authored an important new study titled “Labour dynamics, harvest cost and sharing behaviour in an Inuit mixed economy: How to adapt to a changing socio-ecological system?” in Ecological Economics.

This multi-year research conducted in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, explores how the transition to a wage-based economy is affecting traditional Inuit food-sharing practices. The study examines:
– The direct and indirect costs of harvesting country food
– Socioeconomic barriers to harvesting
– Seasonal trends and labour dynamics
– Impacts on sharing networks and community food security

Findings provide critical insights for supporting hunters, strengthening food-sharing systems, and informing future policy, including the potential role of guaranteed basic income in mixed economies.
