Bruno Arcand, a PhD candidate at Carleton’s School of Public Policy and Administration, recently participated in the 3rd International Workshop on Multisystem Dynamics in Sustainability Transitions to explore these questions. Held at ZHAW in Winterthur, Switzerland, this two-day event was an opportunity to present his research, conducted in collaboration with his co-supervisor Professor Daniel Rosenbloom, and to engage with leading scholars in the field.

His talk highlighted the importance of integration between different systems to achieve net-zero transitions, and the need to carefully examine how this will impact system roles, capabilities and resources. Through a case study of how oilsands and electricity systems have become coupled in Alberta, he stressed the need to better understand power dynamics underlying system integration, the central role played by governments in coupling systems, and the importance of exerting pressure on dominant technologies to yield change.

Taken together, the workshop was a rich opportunity for cross-disciplinary exchanges and new learnings!
