SPPA PhD student Derek J. Patterson’s recent op-ed in The Hill Times

In “Carney just signalled the end of market liberalism—and the start of sovereign reconstruction,” Patterson argues that Canada is entering a new era of economic policy. He suggests that, under Prime Minister Mark Carney, the country must move beyond decades of market liberalism and U.S.-centric integration, toward a model of economic sovereignty and strategic reconstruction. This shift, he contends, is essential for building resilience in the face of global instability and trade disruptions.

Patterson calls for a bold reimagining of Canada’s development strategy—one that prioritizes national interests, long-term planning, and climate-aligned industrial policy. His piece contributes to an important conversation about the future of Canadian economic governance.
