Final Dissertation Process (please read and confirm)(Required)

Arrangements for the scheduling of the defence must be made through the Graduate Administrator at least six weeks in advance of the anticipated date. Prior to making arrangements, it is incumbent on the student and their Thesis Supervisor to obtain confirmation from all committee members that their paper is ready to be defended, the committee has secured an internal and external examiner, and the date/time for the defence has been agreed to.

For Fall 2025, the last day to submit the final copy of a thesis is January 16, 2026. For Winter 2026, the last day to submit the final copy of a thesis is May 12, 2026. A final thesis copy is when the dissertation has been defended and all revisions have been made. Please note that it is the responsibility of PhD students to verify the dates above, which can be found on the Carleton website, under ‘Dates and Deadlines’.

Learning Outcomes Assessment

The School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA) is implementing a new learning outcomes assessment survey. This survey will be conducted annually, and you will be asked to rate the attainment of the learning outcomes. The learning outcomes are at the program level, not at a course level. A conceptual map describing how the different program components are designed to meet the program learning outcomes is provided in a link at the top of the page. Please recognize that the attainment of the learning outcomes depends on your year in the program, and that you will be able to continue to progress on these learning outcomes as your progress in the program. After the rating, an open-text section will allow you to provide additional comments regarding the learning outcomes shall you wish to do so.
