Ahmed Hassan
Associate Professor; Associate Chair, Undergraduate Studies (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering)
Ahmed Hassan has been teaching a wide range of undergraduate courses in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University since 2020. His teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that students want to learn and that instructors play an important role in removing the barriers that make learning difficult.
Hassan’s approach focuses on four key areas: fostering curiosity through clear learning objectives and assessments, humanizing the student-teacher relationship, continuously improving teaching practices through feedback and using technology to address logistical challenges. Hassan has led a number of technology-based teaching innovations, including the implementation of Möbius for online assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic and the use of Assign2 for the digital assessment of in-person paper-based exams.
Beyond the classroom, he is deeply engaged in student experience initiatives. His contributions include supervising design competition teams, overseeing the department’s first-year internship program and leading the department’s student experience committee.
Through his commitment to teaching innovation, student engagement and experiential learning opportunities, Hassan brings a strong student-centred perspective to initiatives focused on enhancing the student experience.
