Canadian-EU Migration Policy Workshop hosted by the Centre for European Studies
“Balancing Humanitarianism and Security:
The European Union’s Responses to New Migration and Refugee Issues”

This one-day workshop will promote understanding and include discussions of the current state of affairs of the EU migration policy; compare the EU’s approach to migration from outside the EU; and, to promote learning of the Canadian migration policy.
Speakers and workshop participants include Canadian experts and the following keynote speakers from Europe:
Dr. Petra Bendel is a Political Scientist and the Director of the Central Institute for Area Studies (Zentralinstituts für Regionenforschung). Her areas of expertise include but are not limited to policies related to human rights, climate change, migration, and integration, international and comparative political systems, with a specific interest in the European Union. One of her latest publications is a comparative study titled: Canada and Germany – Migration and Integration in the EU.
Dr. Sergio Carrera is a senior research fellow and Head of the Justice and Home Affairs Programme at the Center for European Policy Studies, in Brussels. His areas of expertise include justice and home affairs, citizenship, migration, asylum, borders and internal security. He received his Ph.D. on immigration and citizenship from University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. He also holds an LL.M. in European, Comparative and International Law from the same university.
Dr. Michael Collyer is a Senior Lecturer in Geography (Sussex Centre for Migration Research, Geography, International Development). During the 2012/13 academic year he has a Fulbright scholarship and will be based in the Department of Geography at the University of Washington, Seattle. Before his appointment as lecturer at Sussex he held a three-year Marie Curie Outgoing International Fellowship, based at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He was previously a Nuffield Foundation New Career Development Fellow at Abdelmalek Essaadi University in Tétouan, Morocco. He completed his PhD, on the dynamics of the Euro-Algerian migration system, in 2002.
Dr. Shahamak Razaei is an Associate Professor and the Head of the Social Science study program at Roskilde University in Denmark. He has a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Southern Denmark and a Master of Science in Economics from at Aalborg University. He has special expertise in network analysis, quantitative analysis, small enterprises research, ethnic businesses, migration and labour market relations.
This event is supported by a grant from the European Union and by the Canada-Europe Transatlantic Dialogue, which receives funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
