Areas of Research: My dissertation looks at domestic musical activity in Ontario between 1880 and 1920. I am particularly interested in the gender, class, and cultural discourses which made music every bit as much a social performance as an individual leisure pursuit. My thesis looks at a variety of topics, including: retailing and purchasing instruments, practicing and performing in the home, musical education, popular song writing, and the influence of new technologies such as player pianos. The final chapter will look at contemporaries’ heated debates over the role of music on the home front during the Great War.
