Course Description: Pandemics have shaped the course of human history, often with profound and transformative impacts on society. Historical records of pandemics date back to at least 430 BCE with the Plague of Athens, which struck Athens during the Peloponnesian war. The global SARS-CoV-2 pandemic serves as a reminder of the ongoing threats posed by infectious disease. There is thus plenty of incentive to understand and predict pandemics, and to develop interventions to mitigate their effects. In this course, we will explore the molecular, epidemiological, ecological, and evolutionary processes underlying the rapid spread of infectious diseases.
