The UN General Assembly declared 2010 as International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) with a view to bringing greater attention to the continuing issue of biodiversity loss and its social, economic, environmental and cultural implications; and desigated the Montreal-based UN Secretariat for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) as focal point for IYB activities.  Globally, 2010 could see the creation of a new Inter-governmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, possibly during a special 1-day high-level segment of the General Assembly in September 2010.   Also in 2010, a 15-member expert panel convened by the Council of Canadian Academies will issue a report on “The State and Trends of Biodiversity Science in Canada: Are we equipped to understand the challenges of our biodiversity resources?
