Current Research

Dr. Overy is a Research Scientist at Agriculture and AgriFood Canada and runs a multi-disciplinary research program in metabolomics, natural products discovery and high-throughput culturing of fungi for biotechnological applications. His research interests include integrating mass spectrometry based metabolomics with current –omics methodologies in a variety of disciplines, including natural products discovery and metabolite phenotyping of fungi, modeling host/pathogen metabolite interaction during crop disease, and applying gene editing tools to link fungal plant pathogen secondary metabolism with corresponding biosynthetic gene clusters.  Dr. Overy’s lab also actively isolates a variety of fungi from different environments and formally describes new species of fungi using polyphasic taxonomic approaches (traditional microscopy, phylogenetics, and secondary metabolite profiling). Dr. Overy holds an adjunct professor status with the Department of Biology at Carleton University and he teaches courses in Mass Spectrometry Based Metabolomics both nationally and internationally as directed studies courses (undergraduates) and graduate level classes.
