Current Research

As a research scientist with Health Canada’s Ionizing Radiation Health Sciences Division (IRHSD), Dr. Beaton-Green manages biological dosimetry (biodosimetry) research examining the cellular response of blood cells (lymphocytes) to ionizing radiation. This includes the conceptualization of projects, planning, supervising research staff and students, participating in laboratory work, analysis of data, and writing of scientific manuscripts.

Major projects include:

  1. research for automated methods development to process a high number of blood samples for biodosimetry analysis in the case of large-scale radiation events,
  2. the development of computational models to generate dose-response calibration curves tailored to specific radiation exposures, and
  3. the ongoing development of Health Canada’s biodosimetry program. This has also included the development of Health Canada’s astronaut biodosimetry program for assessing long-term, stable damage from radiation exposure in space.

In 2022, Dr. Beaton-Green also joined the United Nations Scientific Committee for the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) secretariat as a technical expert. In this capacity, she supports the management of the technical and scientific work needed to complete two evaluations (1) Second primary cancer after radiation therapy, and (2) Diseases of the circulatory system from radiation exposure.
