Current Research
Since April 2011 Guillaume Bilodeau have been a research scientist at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) in the Ottawa Plant Laboratory (OPL) on Fallowfield. He is in charge of the Pathogen Identification Research Laboratory (PIRL) focusing on research and development of detection tools using genomics for plant pathogens and support the OPL diagnostic section through research and technology transfer. His focus lies in the planning, organizing, coordinating and conducting of research and in the development of technologies for the detection and identification of plant pests (Fungi and Oomycetes) and nematodes of importance in regulation. PIRL has experience with molecular techniques such as PCR, qPCR, isothermal amplification, sample preparation, microfluidics, genomics and metagenomics.
Our laboratory is very active and we are involved in “big data” projects that are rich in metagenomics and genomics databases for development of new detection and genotyping tools. He currently has several research projects underway where we are using genomics to develop tools for the detection of phytopathogens and the enhancement of preparation of CFIA for regulating and controlling the spread of pathogens. Our lab is working with most recent high throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies to sequence genomes of our target plant pathogens to identified unique region to design detection tools. We also screening insect and spore straps, pollen and other samples using HTS with amplicon sequencing to search for potential invasive or regulated species. The expertise of the lab is more on fungi and oomycete including the Phytophthora, Verticillium and others. Big part of our work is oriented bioinformatics to develop tools and pipeline to analyze our sequencing information. In brief the topics of our lab are molecular biology, genomics, metagenomics, bioinformatics and plant pathology.
