Current Research
My research interests are fairly broad but tend to be quite applied and designed to support fisheries managers within Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as well as the recovery of Great Lakes Areas of Concern. Towards these efforts, my research group uses tools such as acoustic telemetry to better understand the core ecology of freshwater fishes, including their seasonal home range, residency, movements and habitat use. Increasingly we are also using this technology to explore the ecology of non-native fishes (e.g., goldfish) and species at risk (e.g., American eel), as well as to help refine field sampling protocols to target specific species based on temporal changes in their depth and spatial distribution. Understanding the types of habitat fish use throughout their life cycle is critical for protecting and remediating fish stocks. I am therefore quite interested in understanding how this habitat may change under future climate change scenarios (e.g., response of aquatic vegetation to changing water levels) as well as how invasive aquatic vegetation (e.g., Phragmites australis and Nitellopsis obtusa) may alter or replace existing fish habitat.
