I am a comparative physiologist working towards gaining an integrative understanding of the mechanisms underlying thermal tolerance limits and by extension variation and plasticity therein. Most of this work is conducted on insect model systems where large differences in thermal tolerance are found between species or can be induced within a single species (like the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster). The aspects of physiology I focus on investigating in relation to this inter- and intraspecific variation can be loosely divided into 1) ion balance regulation, 2) muscle physiology, and 3) neurophysiology – all or some of which contain elements of electrophysiology, pharmacology, molecular biology, and genetics
