Founded in 2016 by Dr Charles CHEN Yidan, core founder of Tencent Group which is the largest and most popular Internet service portal in Mainland China, the Yidan Prize has a mission to create a better world through education.
Opportunity
The Yidan Prize, which bestows HK$60 million (around US$7.8 million) worth of awards annually starting from 2017, is divided into two categories: The Yidan Prize for Education Research, which recognizes outstanding research that contributes in significant ways to education, and the Yidan Prize for Education Development, which recognizes innovative ideas that tackle important challenges in the field of education. Each Yidan Prize Laureate will receive a gold medal and HK$30 million (around US$3.9 million) worth of awards, which include a cash prize of HK$15 million (around US$1.9 million) and a project fund of HK$15 million. Through a series of initiatives, the prize serves to establish a platform that allows the global community to engage in conversation around education and to play a role in education philanthropy.
Eligibility
The Judging Committee will select two Laureates, one for the Yidan Prize for Education Research and the other one for the Yidan Prize for Education Development. Yidan Prize Laureates can either be individuals or teams (up to three members in each team). In case the winner is a team, the cash prize and project fund will be shared equally among the team members.
The Yidan Prize invites nominators, such as government bodies, non-governmental organizations, professional associations and thought leaders, to propose nominees for the prize. Self-nomination is accepted only in exceptional cases. Directors, Judging Committee members and Global Advisory Board members of the Yidan Prize are not eligible to make nominations or be nominated. In addition, nominators and supporters should not be family members of the nominee(s) or anyone who would possibly lead to a perceived, potential or actual conflict of interest.
In case of a team nomination, the team shall consist of no more than three persons, and the team members have played a critical part in an achievement. They can be teachers, researchers, academics, policymakers, advocates, etc.
Funding Available
Each Yidan Prize Laureate (either an individual or a team up to three members) will receive a certificate, a gold medal and HK$30 million (around US$3.9 million) worth of awards – a cash prize of HK$15 million (around US$1.9 million), and a project fund of HK$15 million to be distributed over three years.
