The CSAS Learning and Writing Development Series aim to enhance student learning in an academic environment. Each of the series is designed to serve as an academic support tool and resource for students and for course instructors to include in their courses. These development series provide students with the necessary academic knowledge and study skills to succeed in their post-secondary education at Carleton and beyond. Each series includes a variety of learning and writing support workshops that are interactive and evidence-based.
Each development series is also eligible for students’ Co-Curricular Record (CCR). The series will be approved for CCR eligibility at the end of the Fall and Winter terms upon completing the requirements found below. Please note that you must get 100% on each of the final online workshop assessments and must fulfill all of the requirements within one academic year (September to April).
How can I participate?
Students may self-enrol in the required CSAS Learning and Writing Support Workshops on our Online Resources page. Once there, click on the red ‘Learning & Writing Support Workshops and Resources’ button, which will direct you to self-enrol on Brightspace.
CSAS Learning and Writing Development Series
- Academic Writing Refresher
This development series will aim to support you in developing transferrable academic writing skills and strategies necessary for academic success. In order to have this CCR request approved, students must complete three (3) out of the five (5) of the required Learning and Writing Support Workshops.
Workshops:
- Note-taking
- Editing and Proofreading
- Introduction to Fundamentals of Academic Writing
- Introduction to Starting Academic Papers
- Writing for Academic Purposes
- Ace Your Assessments

This development series offers workshops that will support you in feeling more confident about your test-taking abilities and build effective learning strategies that can help you work toward academic success. In order to have this CCR request approved, students must complete three (3) out of the five (5) of the required Learning and Writing Support Workshops

- Memory and Concentration
- Building Successful Study Habits
- Test and Exam Preparation
- Time Management
- Learning and Writing Prep.

This development series will provide you with the essential academic support and study strategies necessary to prepare for and succeed in your post-secondary education. In order to have this CCR request approved, students must complete three (3) out of the five (5) of the required Learning and Writing Support Workshops

This development series will provide you with strategies and resources to effectively adapt and build upon your skills when engaging in university-style lectures. This includes foundational skills required to get the most out of your lecture-style courses and to facilitate autonomous learning. In order to have this CCR request approved, students must complete three (3) out of the five (5) of the required Learning and Writing Support Workshops

This development series will aim to encourage you to participate in a variety of learning and writing support workshops to develop skills to be a successful student both inside and outside of the classroom. In order to have this CCR request approved, students must complete at least three (3) out of the following Learning and Writing Support Workshops

- Students must complete any three (3) Learning and Writing Support Workshops
- The five can be chosen from the following: Academic Integrity; Academic Reading; Balancing Life and Learning; Building Successful Study Habits; Critical Thinking; Editing and Proofreading; Effective Presentations; Introduction to Fundamentals of Academic Writing; Introduction to Academic Papers; Learning Preferences; Managing Procrastination; Maximizing your Academic Motivation; Memory and Concentration; Note-Taking; Resources for Reaching Academic Success; Test and Exam Preparation; Time Management; Working in Groups, or Writing for Academic Purposes.
- Strategies for Collaborative Learning

Through this development series, you will have the opportunity to build skills and strategies to communicate effectively, work in groups, seek appropriate resources and supports, and develop an understanding of the collaborative learning process and how it can be used as a tool in academic success. In order to have this CCR request approved, students must complete three (3) out of the five (5) of the required Learning and Writing Support Workshops

This development series is targeted towards helping you build learning skills and strategies surrounding effective planning, time management, and organizational skills that can support you in achieving academic success. In order to have this CCR request approved, students must complete three (3) out of the five (5) of the required Learning and Writing Support Workshops

This development series aims to support you in developing a better understanding of the necessary writing skills to achieve academic success in university. The selected workshops introduce the process of writing effectively, from starting to acquire information by reading academic literature to editing and proofreading your written assignments. In order to have this CCR request approved, students must complete three (3) out of the five (5) of the required Learning and Writing Support Workshops

Non-Credit Student Success Certificate
- Non-Credit Student Success Certificate
The certificate helps students develop key academic and life skills that support their success during their studies and beyond. By attending at least three “how to…from 10 to 2” drop-in sessions, students will gain practical tools in areas such as academic writing, study skills, and other essential topics that contribute to both academic performance and personal growth, including employability, mental health, finances, and more.
Required elements for this certificate:
- Attend one learning “how to…from 10 to 2” drop-in session
- e.g. “how to…manage procrastination”
- Attend one writing “how to…from 10 to 2” drop-in session
- e.g. “how to…write an introduction”
- Attend one guest visit for “how to…from 10 to 2” session
- e.g. “how to…use library’s search tools and cite sources”
