Seminar Series

Graduate Studies

What is ITEC 5001?

ITEC 5001 is a series of seminars and lectures given by students, faculty and visitors. On occasion, the seminar series will also feature speakers from Carleton or from the Information Technology community at large, both academic and industrial, exposing students to the latest topics in research. All masters and PhD students must satisfy the Attendance and Presentation requirements to complete ITEC 5001, which is a graduate program requirement at the School of Information Technology.

The seminar series is managed by the Seminar Coordinator (CSIT-Seminars@cunet.carleton.ca).

Completing the Attendance Requirement

Earning Attendance Credits

To complete the attendance requirement, students must attend at least eight seminars. At the seminar, students must sign an attendance sheet to record their ITEC seminar attendance.

The schedule for ITEC 5001 seminars lists upcoming sessions and is updated regularly. Check on Saturday for any news about a talk on the following Monday. If no talks are scheduled by then, the seminar session for that Monday is automatically cancelled (no seminar session will be held on that day).

There is a maximum of two presentations per seminar session. Each seminar session (whether there are 1 or 2 presentations) counts as 1 attendance credit.

External Events

Students may earn up to three attendance credits through attending external events. Before attending an external event for Attendance credit, please inquire in advance with the Seminar Coordinator if the event can count towards ITEC seminar attendance.

Some events are pre-approved for external event credit. These will be shared to the graduate students mailing list. They will also be listed on the schedule spreadsheet under “Pre-Approved External Events”.

For external event attendance to count for attendance credits, students must submit a proof of attendance via an external attendance form signed by the event organizer.

Checking Attendance

To check your attendance, email the Seminar Coordinator with the word “attendance” in the subject line (the message body can be left blank). An automated message will be sent back to you with your attendance record.

Completing the Presentation Requirement

Earning Presentation Credit

To complete the attendance requirement, students must satisfactorily present at least once at a seminar. If you would like to present in an ITEC seminar, please email the seminar coordinator.

Presentation Expectations

Each presentation slot is 30 minutes long (~20-25 mins long presentation, with ~5-10 mins for Q&A). Presentations that go on for too long may be subject to being cut off during the seminar session and not receiving presentation credit.

Presentations can be on any academic topic. Acceptable presentation types include but are not limited to:

The presentation should be catered towards the School of Information Technology graduate students and the School’s academic community. Thus, presentations should be made accessible and understandable to people whether they have a Networking or Digital Media background. Make sure to explain any domain-specific terminology and to be aware of your audience’s knowledge level.

Presentations should be polished and professional. The presenter should not be reading closely off the screen or notes. Doing so may result in not receiving presentation credit.

Registering to Present

Email the Seminar Coordinator to register to present, no later than 2 weeks before you present. Include the title of your talk and which date/time you want. Please send a 150-250 word abstract by the Wednesday end of the day before your talk for the Seminar Coordinator to distribute to the graduate student mailing list.

Completing the ITEC 5001 Requirement

Once you have completed the Attendance and Presentation requirements, you may register for ITEC 5001 on Carleton Central. If you meet these requirements for ITEC 5001, you will receive your credit (pass/fail) for this course at the end of the semester.

Student’s Responsibility

It is the student’s responsibility to take the lead on completing their ITEC 5001 requirements early and before they graduate. Students who have yet to complete ITEC 5001 are expected to be available to attend all seminar slots, as the seminar is a core part of their program.

It is the students’ responsibility to make sure that their attendance is recorded.

Reminders about seminar sessions are sent a few days before they are held. However, students should not count on the reminders as their only source of information and should actively consult the seminar schedule if they still have yet to complete the attendance requirement.

Students are responsible for making sure they are on track to complete ITEC 5001 requirements before they graduate. As a student, do not leave ITEC 5001 entirely until your last semester. We cannot guarantee there will be enough presentations in one semester for you to complete the entirety of your seminar requirements all at once. If you are in your last semester, it is your responsibility to check and (if necessary) coordinate at the start of the semester with the Seminar Coordinator to ensure there are enough sessions for you to attend to complete your attendance requirements. If you do not complete the seminar, you may need to pay an extra semester’s tuition just to complete it.
