What are the seminars about?

Within the realm of data science and data analytics research, the topics are endless! Our seminars cover a variety of subjects and can be lecture-style or hands-on, technical workshops. For an idea of what to expect, browse our past seminars.

Do I need to bring anything?

Not usually — but if there are any additional requirements of attendees (e.g., bring your own laptop for a machine learning demo), it will be indicated in the event listing.

Who are the speakers?

Our seminar speakers are some of the country’s most distinguished data science researchers and practitioners from academia and industry.

Can I nominate a seminar speaker?

Absolutely! In fact, we encourage you to contact us if you, or someone you know, would be interested in participating in our seminar series.

Who’s invited?

Invitations are first sent to our mailing list, and are then circulated on campus and by our industry partners. To join our mailing list, simply visit our Contact Us page and submit the online form.

Do I need to register?

Seminars are open to anyone with interests in data science or data analytics, but please note, registration is required as seats are limited. You will be asked to check in at the registration desk upon arrival.

How can I register?

Please register online using the online form provided in the event listing.

When is the next seminar?

We list upcoming seminars on our website but the best way to ensure that you’ll hear about them is by joining our mailing list.

What is the seminar schedule?

The seminars usually take place on Tuesdays between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. during the academic year (September to April).

Where are the seminars held?

Our seminars are held on campus, usually in a seminar room on the fifth floor of the Herzberg Building. Please check the event listing for exact location.

How long are the seminars?

Seminars run anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes with additional time for questions at the end. If you are unable to stay for the full session, you are welcome to leave early.

Where can I park?

Please visit our parking website for more information on visitor options.

Will there be coffee?

Yes! Complimentary refreshments are provided for all attendees, at every seminar.

Will photos or video be taken during the event?

Probably. With the speaker’s permission, we photograph and/or record our sessions. The images and video may later be used in print and online media produced by the Institute for Data Science.

Can I obtain a copy of the presentation?

On occasion, presenters will provide the Institute with a copy of their slideshow presentation, which is then posted on our website. We sometimes film the seminars as well. Video recordings of past seminars can be found here.
