Alice Zhou is a PhD candidate in the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture’s Cultural Mediations program at Carleton University. She obtained a dual major B.A. on Psychology and Japanese Language and Culture at the University of British Columbia, where she proceeded to complete an M.A. in Asian Studies specializing in Japanese Popular Culture. Her research examines horror video games from Japan, Mainland China and Taiwan to understand how the tension between connection and repulsion within horror video games can form experiences that explore and negotiate complex regional social conditions and relationships.

For the 2025-2026 school year, Alice will be conducting a portion of her dissertation research in Japan, as a recipient of The Japan Foundation’s Japanese Studies Fellowship. For the duration of this fellowship, she will be hosted by Meiji University as a Guest Researcher.
