Lecture Abstract
Modern buildings are increasingly equipped with a wide array of sensors to monitor and control the indoor environment. Data collected from sensors in buildings represent an untapped opportunity for us to optimize the operation of buildings by reducing energy use and operation costs and improving occupant comfort, health, and workplace productivity. This presentation provides an overview of the lessons learned in studying the data gathered from automation and control networks in large commercial and institutional buildings. Examples from the following case studies will be provided:
- Occupancy detection and occupant-centric indoor climate control
- Detection of abnormalities in indoor climate control
- Text-mining operator work order logs
- Virtual meters and load disaggregation to understand energy flows in buildings
Speaker Bios

Burak Gunay, PhD, PEng is an Assistant Professor at Carleton University in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research examines methods to optimize the operation of commercial and institutional buildings for comfort and energy use. He uses the operational data gathered inside modern automation and control networks to learn from the occupants’ comfort, behaviour, and presence patterns. Using operational data, he employs inverse modelling to characterize building equipment operation and the envelope performance. Aside from field-scale data analyses, his research commonly uses building performance simulation. |

Brodie Hobson is a Master’s student, teaching assistant, and recent graduate of Carleton’s Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering program. Hobson’s current research at Carleton focuses on smart building operations to improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort. |
