Since the late 20th century, expectations of both healthcare providers and patients have shifted towards a model based on active and involved patients – those who show early signs of interest in creating a care plan for illnesses and in keeping track of their health. Healthcare services are also making more individualized care plans where patients can monitor their health statuses and set their health goals.

Despite an increase in patient engagement, finding a balance within collaborative healthcare that expands patient involvement without placing additional pressures and responsibilities on the patient’s shoulders remains a challenge. While research shows that technology can help mitigate potential obstacles patients may face in developing their care plan, the questions of how, where, and what technologies to design remain largely unanswered.

In this talk, Dr. Rajabi will discuss several projects in which her research team has designed and developed effective technologies and data visualization tools to help patients and healthcare providers increase patient engagement and provide means for collaboratively analyzing patient health data.

About the Speaker

Dr. Fateme Rajabi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University, where she initiated a new research group, HeathVis Futures Lab, aimed at exploring how to design and develop innovative technologies to support increasing patient engagement in their medical care. Her research is funded by several Canadian federal granting agencies, including NSERC Discovery, NSERC Alliance, and NRC Aging in Place. Prior to joining Carleton, Dr. Rajabi was a researcher in the Department of Surgery at McGill University Health Centre, where she was a recipient of the FRQS (Fonds de Recherche du Québec – Santé) postdoctoral fellow scholarship in 2020.

About the Series

Ingenious Talks is a special speaker series from the Faculty of Engineering and Design that engages the community in discussions of timely and innovative ideas in engineering, design and technology.
