Regulations

Academic Standing

EP students are expected to maintain strong academic performance throughout their studies. A minimum grade of B- (70%) is required in all courses and students must maintain an overall minimum GPA of B- (7.0).

Students whose GPA falls below this level may receive an Academic Warning and will be required to improve their academic standing within a specified period. Continued failure to meet the program’s academic requirements may result in Required Withdrawal from the program.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a fundamental expectation of all EP students. Upholding integrity ensures fairness, protects the value of your degree, and safeguards your academic standing and immigration status where applicable.

Carleton’s academic integrity policy is grounded in five core principles:

These principles apply to all forms of academic work, including written assignments, code, data analysis, algorithms, images, take-home examinations, final projects, and any other graded assessment.

Unless an instructor has explicitly stated that collaboration is permitted, students are expected to complete their work independently. Students must not share assignments, drafts, ideas, or past submissions, use another student’s work, or allow their own work to be used by someone else. All academic integrity violations are subject to disciplinary consequences under university regulations.

Consequences of Academic Integrity Violations

Violations are taken seriously and may result in:

Maintaining academic integrity protects your academic record, immigration status, employment eligibility, and financial stability. For international students, certain penalties (such as a mandatory Leave of Absence) may impact study permit status and temporary work eligibility in Canada.

Faculty members and the Engineering Practice team are committed to supporting student success. Students with questions regarding academic integrity requirements should contact their instructor or the program office prior to submitting their work.

Changing Streams

Students who wish to change their stream within the Engineering Practice (EP) program may submit a request before arriving on campus or in their first term, providing the request is made before the course registration deadline.

A written rationale must be emailed to ep_gradadmin@carleton.ca explaining the reason for the request and how their academic or professional background supports the new stream.

Students are also required to complete the “change of stream” form and send it to the EP Office by email at ep_gradadmin@carleton.ca. To obtain the form, please contact the EP Graduate Administrator at the same email address.

After the request has been reviewed, the EP Office will contact the student with the decision and outline any next steps that may be required.

Directed Studies

The Directed Studies course (EGEN 5099) allows EP students to pursue a specialized topic under the supervision of a full‑time faculty member. Students are responsible for securing a supervisor and submitting the required approval form and documentation by email to ep_gradadmin@carleton.ca at least 30 days before the term begins. Full course guidelines are provided on the second page of the Directed Studies Course Registration Approval Form.

Graduation

Students who expect to complete all EP program requirements must apply to graduate through Carleton University’s official graduation application process. All graduation applications must be submitted through Carleton Central by the published deadline for the intended graduation term. Students should also monitor their Carleton email for important updates or additional steps related to the graduation process.

Before submitting an application, students should review their academic audit to confirm that all degree requirements have been completed. If there are any questions about program completion, students are encouraged to consult the Engineering Practice Office for clarification.

For detailed information on graduation requirements, deadlines, and procedures, students should consult the Registrar’s Office graduation page.

Program Extension

If you wish to extend your study period, you will need to formally apply for a program extension.

To request an extension, please contact the EP Office at ep_gradadmin@carleton.ca and complete the extension form.

You will be required to provide a rationale explaining why you need additional time to complete the program. Your request will be reviewed by the Graduate Academic Committee, and if approved, you will be permitted to extend your studies.

For further inquiries, including any associated fees, please contact the Office of Graduate Studies at graduate.studies@carleton.ca.

Scheduled Summer Break

In the Master of Engineering Practice program, the summer term (May to August) is considered a regularly scheduled break approved by the University as stated in the Graduate Calendar. Alternatively, students have the option to enroll in Summer term courses when offered by the program. By doing so, students can complete their program of study four months earlier. Regardless of their choice, students will resume/continue their full-time studies in September.
