The presentation will feature a Ukrainian social entrepreneur, Alice Zhuravel, discussing her social initiative, Tozhsamist, and diversity’s role in constructing national identity. The second speaker is a graduate student from EURUS, Auguste Gauthier, who will present on Ukraine’s LGBTQ community after Russia’s Invasion.

The event is co-organized by the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) and the Carleton Ukrainian Students Club.

About the speakers:

Alice Zhuravel is a visionary Ukrainian with Nigerian heritage, who embarked on a remarkable journey of social impact. Transitioning from a creative career to the world of humanitarian work in an international NGO in March 2022, she later founded the Tozhsamist social initiative. Through Tozhsamist, Alice impacts on national identity and belonging of Ukrainian society by catalyzing discussions on self-identity, culture, and future prospects with active individuals. Alice is an advocate for Positive Culture.

Auguste Gauthier is a second-year master’s student in the European, Russian and Eurasian Studies Program here at Carleton University. His research currently focuses on the history of LGBTQ rights in East Central and Eastern Europe, and on the migration of LGBTQ Ukrainians. Field-work research for this project was conducted this summer in Poland and Czechia. Prior to joining Carleton University, Auguste graduated from McGill University with a bachelor’s degree in history and Russian culture.

Note that this is a hybrid event. As such, participation both in-person or online is possible.
