“Competing Regionalism in the Europe-Caucasus-Asia Region’s Transport Corridor”

SSHRC Insight Development Grant

Project Leaders and collaborators: Prof. Crina Viju-Miljusevic, Dr. Mukhtar Hajizada and Prof. Martin Geiger

This project focuses on the Europe-Caucasus-Asia (ECA) cooperation and the interdependency between the participating countries. The region provides a unique case study of overlapping regionalisms pursued by three core actors: the People’s Republic of PRC (PRC), the Russian Federation (RF) and the European Union (EU).

The project will seek to answer the following research questions:

  • What are the distinctive roles of the core actors in reshaping the patterns of international trade, investment and mobility of human capital in the ECA link of the global supply chain?
  • To what extent are the formal mechanisms for regional cooperation adequate to ensure that the supply chain is adaptable and resilient during disruption and the COVID pandemic?
  • How does this model of interregional integration help us understand the new regionalism theory in the making?
