A typical day at work looks like…
Currently my days are split between school and work. At school I am completing an MSc in Public Health at McGill University. For work, I partake in many compliance and verification activities which involves conducting document reviews of regulated parties who work with pathogens and toxins. I also do a lot of data analysis work for the office in regards to our annual reports and analysis is of our current practices.
My future goals are…
In the future I would welcome an opportunity to become a permanent employee with the Public Health Agency of Canada. This would allow me to further my career in the government and would open doors to several opportunities to move around from within.
My degree has helped me get to where I am today by…
My Food Science degree initially got me a CO-OP position with the Agency in my undergrad, a job which I still hold today. It also helped me acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to get accepted to the MScPH program where I can apply my analytical and technical skills to a new field.
My advice for current students is…
I highly recommend all students seize the opportunity to get a CO-OP placement. Our degree is so versatile and provides you with so many different skills you can apply to a wide range of jobs. You don’t have to limit yourself to the hard sciences if that is not your main interest, there are so many more opportunities that are open to you with this degree.
