Funding for Ph.D. and MSc. Research on Earth Observations for Cumulative Effects Monitoring
The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, EO Baseline Data for Cumulative Effects Project, is inviting letters of interest for funding for graduate positions in the topic of Regional Monitoring of Cumulative Effects. Applicants must already be registered in a graduate program at a Canadian University, or have a letter of support from a prospective graduate supervisor.
Successful applicants will participate as part of a three-year study focused on the application of Earth Observation and remote sensing technologies and methodologies to support cumulative effects monitoring related to environmental impacts associated with responsible resource development and distribution. The research will primarily focus on the application of remote sensing to support the following areas:
1. Wildlife habitat – Map critical habitats for key wildlife species (e.g., caribou) using satellite observations, UAV and in-situ surveys; and assess cumulative impacts on these habitats by human and natural disturbances within select regions.
2. Disturbance and Remediation – Develop and monitor regional environmental risk indicators related to the cumulative effects of resource management and distribution.
Students will develop novel remote sensing algorithms to contribute to environmental monitoring related to one or more of the above topics, advancing methodologies to support cumulative effects assessment and monitoring on regional scales. The students should pursue opportunities to disseminate research findings through publications in scientific journals or conferences. Planning data acquisitions, pursuing field campaigns, and analysis of remote sensing imagery are all potential activities that can be included.
Essential Qualifications:
- Have successfully completed Bachelors Degree (for a Masters proposal) or Masters Degree (for a Ph.D. proposal) and have a strong background in geomatics, remote sensing or other related field, with an interest in environmental remote sensing.
- Must be registered in a graduate program at a Canadian University, or have a letter of support from a prospective graduate supervisor.
- Ability to program computer codes to facilitate data analysis, and a familiarity with a geomatics software package.
- Be able to demonstrate good writing and oral skills.
Asset Qualifications:
- Prior research as documented with conference presentations or peer-reviewed publications.
