As Canada’s 2025 wildfire season draws to a close, the work to prevent future fires is far from over. Peatlands, carbon-rich ecosystems that store more carbon than any other on Earth — are essential to climate regulation. So how do we protect them?

Dr. Koreen Millard (Department of Geography and Environmental Studies) uses remote sensing to monitor these vast, difficult-to-access boreal landscapes. Her research helps predict and prevent future wildfire risks, safeguarding both our ecosystems and our climate.
