Alumnus Spotlight: Greg Finnegan’s Work on Silvermines Heritage and Hydro Power Innovation

Dr. Greg Finnegan, an alumnus with degrees in geography from Carleton University and York University, is currently engaged with Siga Hydro Ltd. in Nenagh, County Tipperary, where he focuses on cultural heritage and community issues. He is the editor and a key contributor to Silvermines, A Heritage of Mines and Miners, a comprehensive publication exploring the rich mining history of the Silvermines district in Ireland. Greg’s diverse career spans government service in statistics and cartography, academia in Canada and Ireland, and leadership as CEO of a diversified holdings company serving a First Nation in Canada’s Yukon Territory, with interests in mining, renewable energy, and aviation. Since retiring in 2020, he has been instrumental in advancing a €650 million, 296MW pumped hydro station project in County Tipperary, blending his expertise in natural resources, heritage, and sustainable energy. Greg lives in Nenagh and continues to contribute to the understanding and preservation of mining heritage while supporting innovative energy solutions.
