Notice Professor Fraser Taylor 1937 – 2025
The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (DGES) at Carleton University is sad to share the news that Professor Fraser Taylor, Director of the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre (GCRC), passed away early on March 22nd due to natural causes. Professor Taylor had a remarkable and distinguished career at Carleton University, leaving an indelible mark through his significant contributions that extended until the end of his life. His list of accomplishments was extensive; along with other pioneers in the field, he helped advance digital cartography and geographic information science in the 1960s. He made significant contributions to the field for the rest of his life. He received numerous awards for these contributions as a Canadian scholar, including the Killam Prize (2014) and the Order of Canada (2021). You can learn more about his work on Carleton’s GCRC website here.
Fraser’s presence, wisdom, and sense of humour will be profoundly missed by many at DGES and the GCRC.
