Experiential Learning
Experiential learning is a cornerstone of our programs because it allows students to move beyond the classroom and apply geographic theory to real‑world challenges. Carleton’s Department of Geography and Environmental Studies emphasizes hands‑on learning through in class labs, field courses, workplace practicums, co-op and digital mapping training, giving students valuable research skills and practical experience that deepen their understanding of human–environment interactions. This approach reflects the university’s broader commitment to experiential education, which enhances critical thinking, strengthens connections between theory and practice, and improves student engagement and long‑term skill development. By immersing students in meaningful, applied learning environments, our programs prepare graduates to address pressing environmental and social issues with confidence and real‑world expertise.
