Chloé Poitevin-DesRivières
I am a SSHRC doctoral scholar in Geography with a specialization in Political Economy. I completed my MA at Memorial University in Newfoundland, where I examined how notions of identity, community, and relationships created opportunities for localized food economies in the fishery.
My PhD research builds on my interest in localized food economies, stirring in concepts of feminist economic geography, place-making, materiality and embodiment to examine the ways in which craft brewers in the Ottawa-Gatineau region engage with diverse economic practices. My research ultimately asks how the more-than-capitalist practices of craft brewers may help create community economies (economies lead by equitable social and environmental values), and whether these practices can help them thrive in a beer industry structured to favour large, industrial brewing conglomerates.
In addition to beer and brewing, my research and teaching interests are in qualitative research methods, including textual and visual discourse analysis, participant observation and interview research, critical food studies, and geographies of tourism, recreation and leisure.
My doctoral work is supervised by Drs. Patricia Ballamingie (Geography and Environmental Studies) and Irena Knezevic (School of Journalism and Communications).
