Student Testimonials
-
“There was the most incredible selection of clubs and everyone is very involved with student life. There is truly something for everyone. The mountaineering club was one of the best experiences I had while there, and competing on the university of Edinburgh climbing team was so memorable.” – Full Year 2024/2025, Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Science and Practice
“There were many kinds of supports provided to exchange students from academics, for exchange specifically, to mental health, and religion. There were a few mixers at the beginning of each semester and they also have a decent amount of clubs and events to join.” – Full Year 2023/2024, Bachelor of Arts, Linguistics
“There were many international student meet ups to get to know other international students.” – Full Year 2022/2023, Bachelor of Global and International Studies

“The teaching style was different to Carleton in that there was a lot less teaching time and a lot more reading and independent learning and consolidation. Additionally, there was a lot less assessment (e.g. only one midterm assignment and one final assignment). It was different but easy to adjust to.” – Full Year 2024/2025, Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Science and Practice

“I lived in apartment style university residence and I was really happy with it. The location was incredible, and it was really easy to get it set up, but I still had my own space and kitchen. It was easy to find housing in student residence as exchange students are guaranteed a spot. I would recommend staying there and not trying to find external housing as the price is reasonable and it’s a really good way to meet people. They have almost exclusively apartment style residences so it’s as if you rented an apartment.” – Full Year 2024/2025, Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Science and Practice
“UofE had guaranteed accommodation for exchange students, so I stayed there. They had good housing support staff but the meal plan only provided two meals a day. Housing is also a little out of the way but is well connected with busses.” – Full Year 2023/2024, Bachelor of Arts, Linguistics
“I lived in student accommodation, apartment style. I was very happy with my decision. We just had to submit our top 5 choices and then we were given one.” – Full Year 2022/2023, Bachelor of Global and International Studies

“I didn’t set up a bank account, I just used Wise which allowed me to have money in different currencies and has a reasonable conversion rate (much better than a canadian credit card). However, without a UK bank account I couldn’t set up an e-sim for my phone so instead got a month to month physical sim card from a corner store. It was super easy to set up and then cancel, and very inexpensive.” – Full Year 2024/2025, Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Science and Practice
“For my cell phone I used giffgaff. I ordered early enough that they sent me a free sim to my home in Canada and then I brought that overseas with me and swapped it out still in the airport. Highly recommend giffgaff – the app is very user friendly, prices are really good, and there are lots of options. For my banking, I used the Bank of Scotland.” – Full Year 2023/2024, Bachelor of Arts, Linguistics
“I just submitted an online form with the bank of Scotland. Or you could just walk into any branch. For my cell phone I just when to a phone store and got a new sim card and plan.” – Full Year 2022/2023, Bachelor of Global and International Studies

“Going to the Scottish highlands and the Isle of Skye are absolute musts. The hiking there is incredible and so different from what we have here in Canada.” – Full Year 2024/2025, Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Science and Practice
“Planes have limited luggage allowances so packing light is a must – to pack all my clothes for a trip (plus towels because I stayed in hostels) I used a packing cube to compress all my clothes down, it worked really well for me. Free walking tours are great – they’re not actually free, they’re tip-based, but its really helpful to get the lay of the land in a new place and you also get to know some history. Do your research before you go somewhere – and plan your clothes for the weather as well. Geneva was one of the first places I went – its super walkable, and affordable, beautiful, and I also went when they had a Christmas market up.” – Full Year 2023/2024, Bachelor of Arts, Linguistics
“I would say definitely isle of Skye, Glencoe, and Galway in Ireland.” – Full Year 2022/2023, Bachelor of Global and International Studies
