UHIP for Students

The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) applies to the following two groups of students at Carleton:

This page provides information about enrolment, what UHIP covers, making claims, etc. If you are a staff member wanting to enroll in UHIP, please visit our UHIP for Staff page.

UHIP does not cover prescription drugs, dental or vision services. For information on the supplemental drug/dental/vision plan, for undergraduate students go to the CUSA page. If you are a graduate student details are on the GSA website.

Note: For students starting in winter or summer term, enrollment in the supplemental plan is not automatic. Please visit each site for opt-in details and deadline dates.

Enrolment

Enrollment in the University Health Insurance Plan, (UHIP), is mandatory for all international students enrolled (and their dependents in Canada with them) in a degree program at participating Ontario universities including Carleton University.

UHIP enrollment is automatic for those students paying international fees and your coverage period will be reflective of the terms of class enrollment at Carleton.

Fall term class enrollment only : Coverage period September 1 to December 31

Fall and winter term class enrollment (degree program): Coverage period September 1 to August 31

Fall and winter term class enrollment (special student): September 1 to April 30

Winter term class enrollment (degree program): January 1 to August 31

Winter term class enrollment (special student): January 1 to April 30

How to get your UHIP card: You will receive a welcome email from Cowan (the insurance underwriter) to your Carleton email account with details on how to access your UHIP e-card.  Check your spam/junk email folder as it will likely end up there. Print off your UHIP card and carry it with you at all times as you will need to show it to the doctor/hospital for all visits. More details can be found on the UHIP website.
