We are delighted to announce that Dr. Susanne Klausen is a recipient of a 2016-2017 Carleton University Research Achievement Award. Administered by the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International), these awards recognize the outstanding research achievements of university faculty, while providing funds to enhance their ongoing research.
In her previous projects, Klausen has explored the politics of fertility and reproductive control, nationalism and sexuality, and the development of modern South Africa. Her current research focuses on the application of South Africa’s Immorality Act, which criminalized sexual relationships between whites and blacks between 1950 and 1985. In support of this, she will hire Carleton MA student Dahay Daniel to create a searchable database for the hundreds of newspaper articles Klausen has collected on the arrest of South Africans who contravened the Act. Once complete, the database will be made available to students conducting research in this area.
