At least 90 people, including a Canadian history class from the University of Ottawa, attended the third Shannon Lecture on Friday, November 18. Professor Maureen Lux from Brock University gave a powerful lecture on the disturbing history of the treatment of Canadian indigenous people in so-called Indian Hospitals after 1945. The lecture was based on her newly published book Separate Beds: A History of Indian Hospitals in Canada, 1920s to 1980s. Afterwards there were thought-provoking comments and questions from members of the audience, followed by a reception in the History Lounge. The fourth and final Shannon Lecture of 2016 will be given by Professor Thomas Laqueur from the University of California Berkeley on December 2 at 2:30pm in the University Centre 282.
