FR // Du 18 au 27 janvier dernier, les professeur-e-s Marie-Christine Doran (uOttawa), Isabel Orellana (UQAM) et Ricardo Penafiel (UQAM) ont participé à la « Mission canadienne d’observation des droits humains au Chili », organisée par un Collectif québécois de solidarité avec ce pays. Cette mission avait pour but de faire la lumière sur les violations de droits humains au Chili depuis les soulèvements populaires d’octobre 2019, et d’interpeller le gouvernement canadien à briser le silence à ce sujet.

Après les présentations des professeur-e-s Orellana, Doran et Penafiel sur leurs observations sur le terrain, et celle du professeur Gonzalo Bustamante (Universidad Frontera, Chili) sur la situation du peuple Mapuche dans ce contexte, la coordonnatrice pour l’Amérique latine de MiningWatch Canada, Kirsten Francescone, commentera sur les liens possibles entre le silence du gouvernement canadien sur la situation au Chili et les investissements miniers et aquatique d’origine canadienne -l’eau ayant été privatisé au Chili.

EN // On January 18- 27, professors Marie-Christine Doran (uOttawa) Isabel Orellana (UQAM) and Ricardo Penafiel (UQAM) participated in the “Canadian Human Rights Observation Mission in Chile”, organized by the Collectif québécois de solidarité with this country. The purpose of the mission was to shed light on human rights violations in Chile since the social uprisings of October 2019, and to call on the Canadian government to break the silence on this matter.

After the presentations of Professors Orellana, Doran and Penafiel about their observations in the field, and that of Professor Gonzalo Bustamante (Universidad Frontera, Chile) on the situation of the Mapuche people in this context, the coordinator for Latin America of MiningWatch Canada, Kirsten Francescone, will comment on the possible links between the silence of the Canadian government on the situation in Chile and mining and water investments of Canadian origin – water having been privatized in Chile.
