SSAC Music offers upper-year students several opportunities to work independently, gaining course credit for self-directed studies supervised by Faculty and other professionals.
These courses are student initiated and must address topics that are not covered in our regular course offerings. Courses require a proposal of study and permission of the Program. Please plan well in advance of the term by contacting the Undergraduate Supervisor to find out the specific requirements for each course.
MUSI 3205 and 4205 [0.5 credit]
Specialized Academic Studies
Courses designed for BMus or BA Music Honours students who have acquired an extensive background through courses in theory, musicology, or composition. Course content is planned with your Faculty Supervisor, and instruction is one-on-one.
Prerequisite(s): Proposal, permission of the Program, and a minimum GPA of 9.0 in Music.
MUSI 3206 and 4206 [0.5 credit]
Specialized Performance Studies
Courses designed for BMus Honours students who have acquired an extensive background through performance. Course content is planned with the Supervisor of Performance Studies, and instruction is one-on-one with a music professional.
Prerequisite(s): Proposal, permission of the Program, and a minimum GPA of 9.0 in Music.
Approval is subject to budget availability.

Practicum in Music
Practical experience in music-specific projects such as recording studios, librarianship, research, multimedia, etc. at local institutions. Placements are planned with the Undergraduate Supervisor.
Prerequisite(s): BMus or BA Music Honours students with third or fourth-year standing and minimum 9.0 CGPA. For more details see the Practicum page.
MUSI 4906 [1.0 credit]
Honours Portfolio in Composition
This course requires the composition of an original work of substantial proportions, with an accompanying analytical paper. Course content is planned with your Faculty Supervisor, and instruction is one-on-one.
Precludes additional credit for MUSI 4600.
Prerequisite(s): Fourth -year standing, MUSI 3600, proposal, permission of the Program.
MUSI 4908 [1.0 credit]
Honours Essay in Musicology
An Honours research essay of approximately 50 pages. Course content is planned with your Faculty Supervisor, and instruction is one-on-one.
Prerequisite(s): Fourth-year standing, minimum 10.0 CGPA, proposal, and permission of the Program.
MUSI 4909 [1.0 credit]
Portfolio in New Media
The course requires the creation of an original work (or works) of substantial proportions using applications in the electronic studios. A high level of independence and originality will be required. Course content is planned with your Faculty Supervisor, and instruction is one-on-one.
