Graduate Student Event Series: “Staying Motivated Over the Summer,” a Panel Discussion

June 14, 2023 at 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Location:Zoom

Join PMC learning strategists Madison Bettle, Rylee Oram, and Carleton graduate student Julia Bigelow for a discussion on challenges, strategies, and tips for staying motivated as a graduate student over the summer.

Panelists

Dr. Madison Bettle

Dr. Madison Bettle completed her PhD at Western University where she served for five years as the Vice President of the Society of Graduate Students (SOGS), which included launching Western’s first ever Graduate Wellness Week. While in graduate school, she taught as a professor of English Literature and Communications at both Fanshawe College and Conestoga College (2016-2022). Since Fall 2022, she has been working for the Paul Menton Centre (PMC) as a Learning Strategist and helped launch the PMC Graduate Student Writing Group, which is currently in its fifth consecutive term.

Madison’s advice on staying motivated: Celebrate the little things. Ensure you reward yourself when you finish a task—and no task is too small! Although most graduate students work through the summer, this time of year is important for taking breaks, going outside, and seeing family and friends. If you push yourself too hard, you will burn out. Remember that self-care is key to completing your thesis!

Rylee Oram

Rylee Oram is a disabilities coordinator and learning strategist at the PMC, and a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa. She graduated from the University of Ottawa’s Experimental Psychology PhD program in 2021. Her research interests included academic motivation, academic procrastination, and post-secondary mental health.

Rylee’s advice: As a former graduate student, her biggest piece of advice would be to create a schedule/routine that is sustainable, and to take things one day (and one word) at a time!

Julia Bigelow

Julia is a graduate student in her 4th Semester of the Master of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership program at Carleton University.  She also works part-time as a Research Assistant under Dr. Susan Phillips on a project focusing on cross-national justice philanthropy practices and initiatives.

Julia’s advice: Pay attention to what times of the day you are most productive and take advantage of that time. Remember to be realistic with your goals and give yourself grace if you don’t complete them all. Summer is a busy time of year!

Submit any questions you have about staying motivated as a graduate student that you would like the panelists to cover during the event, when you register!
