Carleton University President Benoit-Antoine Bacon and Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Jerry Tomberlin have announced David Hornsby’s appointment as Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) for a five-year term effective July 1, 2023. The role of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) will be expanded to include oversight of academic quality assurance, curriculum development, as well as Teaching and Learning Services. This expanded portfolio will increase collaboration among several central functions of Carleton’s academic mission.
“Over the last five years, David has provided exceptional leadership to Teaching and Learning Services,” said Tomberlin. “His dedication to Carleton makes him well-positioned to take on this important academic leadership role. Please join me in congratulating David on this well-deserved appointment.”
Since 2018, David has served as Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning). In this role, Hornsby has fostered innovative teaching practices by leading the establishment of the Carleton University Chair in Teaching Innovation, Students as Partners Program, and the Future Learning Lab, which includes an extended reality (XR) equipped space offered in partnership with EON Reality, and is on track to include the new Experiential Learning Hub in Fall 2023. He has also led the adoption of a new learning management system and contributed to broader university strategic planning by co-chairing the groups involved in the development of the Carleton Academic Plan, Digital Strategy, and the Transforming University Education report.
A Professor of International Affairs, Hornsby holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, UK and is a former Fulbright Scholar having conducted research at The Fletcher School, Tufts University. He maintains a strong interdisciplinary research record having published in both the biological and social sciences and is an award-winning lecturer.
Hornsby will succeed Dwight Deugo who will complete a four-year term as Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) on June 30. As Vice-Provost, Deugo contributed to Carleton’s academic quality assurance portfolio by leading a record number of cyclical program reviews as part of Carleton’s commitment to review its academic programs every seven years to ensure academic quality standards are met. Under his leadership, Carleton has updated many of its existing academic programs and launched a number of new ones.
A new Associate Vice-President (Quality Assurance) will be appointed to lead the day-to-day functions of academic quality assurance, curriculum development and other strategic academic initiatives. This new role will report to the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic). Deugo has graciously agreed to take on the Associate Vice-President (Quality Assurance) role for six months from July 1 to December 31, 2023 to assist with the transition.
“I would like to express my thanks to Dwight for his many contributions as Vice-Provost and for graciously agreeing to serve as the new Associate Vice-President (Quality Assurance),” said Provost Tomberlin. “The impact of Dwight’s work and leadership in fostering a culture of continuous improvement can be encountered across campus through a broad range of disciplines and degrees. I look forward to our continued collaboration.”
