Specifically, course outlines are required to include the following information:

Learning material is defined as either a physical or digital material that students may need to fully participate in a course. This could include publisher learning and assessment tools, course packs, online subscription-based platforms and services, and software not provided by the University, Faculty, Department or School.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Instructors can choose the extent to which the use of AI is permitted in coursework. Due to the prevalent nature of the use Generative AI, course outlines should include a statement that describes the acceptable use of AI in your course. Sample statements are available on the TLS website. At minimum, the statement should include:

  1. A description of how AI may be used in the course, including examples of what is permitted;
  2. A description of how AI use should be documented, if at all;
  3. Explain the rationale for the adoption of your AI policy; and
  4. A description of limitations (what is “not permitted” in explicit terms, if applicable).

It is also recommended to include the following text:

As our understanding of the uses of AI and its relationship to student work and academic integrity continue to evolve, students are required to discuss their use of AI in any circumstance not described here with the course instructor to ensure it supports the learning goals for the course.

Note: Students can also access resources related to citing Generative AI on the MacOdrum Library website. Additional resources are also available on Carleton’s Artificial Intelligence Hub.
